The Batman Family
Here's a really old one, from the winter of 1998. I did this as a gift to one of my cousins. This actually did appear in the original incarnation of SykoGrafix, but I liked it enough to bring it back.
Growing up in the early 80's had really soured my opinion on Batman. I really disliked Batman as a kid. Perhaps it was because of that ridiculous "Super Friends" cartoon which is still popular for some reason, or the reruns from the Adam West series. They were OK for what they were, but at the same time they took all that was cool about Batman and threw it out the window. By the time the first Batman movie came out, I wanted nothing to do with the Caped Crusader (I have since seen the movie. I liked it, but let us never speak of "Batman and Robin")
That was, until the early 90's when Batman: The Animated Series proved to the world that dark, edgy, stylish, intelligent animation is not only possible, but could be successful, not to mention stay true to the feel of the original source material. It took me awhile to get past my Batman-bias, but now you can count me as a card carrying Bat-Fanatic.
Bruce Timm is my favorite designer and I love the way he and his crew make the characters look so great with only a few lines. It's a bit difficult to recreate the style but I think I did a fairly passable job at capturing the likenesses.
This was done with both watercolour paints and coloured pencils. The outline was brushed on with India Ink. This kind of coloring, especially the shading, is not really typical of this style, but it adds my own spin on character designs that I didn't want to mess with too much.
Bob Kane, the original creator of Batman, passed away around the time I was working on this. So, here's to you, Bob. We miss you down here.
