Well that's just PRIME!

Optimus Primal from Beast Wars

Beast Wars! The TV series that brought back the glory of the Transformers, adding to the story while adding new and innovative twists. Great animation, some fantastic stories, and deep, well developed characters. Like this guy, for instance.

I experimented with a new technique for Photoshop colouring on this one, starting with a clean, retraced pencil drawing, and colouring from that. I didn't like it as much, so now, I usually use darker, rougher lines when I colour a pencil drawing.

The intent in this case was to make Optimus live up to the name "Primal" rather than to stand in the shadow of Optimus Prime. That's why he's got the mean expression and battle ready stance. The design is inspired by Hasbro's toy details and box art, Mainframe's computer animation model, and Takara's anime styled rendition. Things like the mountain with the exposed energon (which is causing that purple glow) and the double moons help to create the atmosphere that the first season of Beast Wars had.

Finished near the end of summer in 1999 as a hypothetical Beast Wars comic book cover. The space at the top is where the title would go.
