King of the Pirates.

Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece

Here is another anime painting I did for a class that I taught. From the series One Piece comes Monkey D. Luffy here, and this painting was finished during the Winter of 2006 using watercolour paints and coloured pencils on cold press illustration board. It was fun to draw in this style because it's such a departure from my own. For the colours I wanted to convey the feeling of a bright sunny day at sea with a simple blue sky, but still have a depth and richness to it rather than just one shade of blue.

I was originally going to just have Luffy giving a thumbs up, but then in looking at some of the reference pictures I was using I got the idea of making him hold a big piece of meat. It filled up the space a bit better and gave the picture some more character.

Now I'm hungry.
