Prime returns home.

Optimus Prime from Transformers

Optimus Prime: The great hero that inspired children all over the world during the mid-80's as leader of the Autobots in the ever-popular toy line and animated television series, The Transformers!

Here, Optimus finally has a chance to return to his home planet Cybertron and here he reflects on the toll the eternal war has taken, as symbolized by the wreckage with the Autobot symbol. The intent was to give Optimus more emotion, and as he doesn't have a mouth, it had to all be in the eyes and in the gesture of his body. He is sad, but maybe there is also a hint of shame, because he knows that his side of the war is just as responsible for the destruction as the other.

I based the buildings in the background straight out of the first issue of the Transformers comic book and roughed them up a bit, tipping them over, smashing things around. Gives things a nice continuity.

Aside from one of his arms, I'm happy with how this turned out, especially in regards how 3-dimentional Optimus looks. Anyone who has ever drawn robots like this before knows exactly how difficult achieving that can be. It was a combination of redrawing many times and luck that did it for me.

Finished summer of 1999 and coloured in Photoshop from an originally inked drawing..
