2 Primes for the Price of one!

Power Master Optimus Prime

This situation is a bit interesting because I'm presenting 2 images that are actually the same, but in different colour schemes. What you see above, however, was the second of the two that I painted.

I entered an art contest where both the subject and the prize were Nucleon Quest Super Convoy, a black recolour by Takara of what we know as Powermaster Optimus Prime. So I drew one around the Spring of 2002. Even though I had pretty much finished the entire thing in one night, I still placed amongst the top 10. Didn't win the grand prize after the vote, but it was cool to be up there. I liked the drawing well enough to save it for potentially being coloured into regular Powermaster Prime colours, and so I did, finishing just before 2002 came to a close. By that time, however, I had the benefit of my digital drawing tablet, and used that drawing as an experiment in a new painting technique. I think it came out rather well.

Nucleon Quest Super Convoy

So this is the first one I did. I only had a mouse when I did this one, but I made do the best I could with what I had. I was going for a somewhat Dreamwave dynamic style of drawing in the pose, but I did my own thing with the rough line work without any ink. Though I kind of wish I had redrawn a few things before I hit it with colour the second time, but that wasn't really the point. Since Nucleon Quest Super Convoy is essentially all black, I added purple and blue highlights to make things more interesting and exciting and to give the whole thing a cool colour scheme. While this one really pales in comparison with the second, I still dig it quite a bit. I think this version makes Prime look like a ninja, which is always cool in my book.

While much more work had gone into the second of the two, and I was obviously more experienced at the time as well, I think this proves that even with limited time and resources, good stuff can come out when you work hard enough. In fact, I might even say that due to the circumstances, the Nucleon Quest Super Convoy picture was more fun.
