If Star Wars was Anime, it might look something like this.

"I sense much fear in you..."

This was finished around spring/summer of 2000 as a way to pitch my then-upcoming anime drawing class to students in another program. I also used it as a teaching tool in regards to composition and character design. But regardless of all that, it's just a cool piece of art and I'm pretty happy with it.

Hey, while you're here, time for a Ninja Rant. Ninjatron says Star Wars Episode 1 was a great movie. It doesn't matter if you don't like Jar Jar. Just enjoy the freakin' movie. It doesn't mater if Anakin was to "kiddie" for a future Sith Lord. He's supposed to be a kid! I found it frightening that this young innocent looking boy, who would say things like "yippie!", would grow up to be such a creature of evil that he would actually partake in the destruction of a planet. The scary thing is that potential is in all of us. I tried to capture that insecure, nervousness into Anakin in this picture. That whole element of the character puts his "I had a dream I was a Jedi" line into a chilling new light. Choke on it, fanboy.

I got the idea for this painting. from a Record of Lo doss War picture, from which I "borrowed" and modified the composition. Notice how I've taken familiar anime themes and concepts in character design and applied them to the appropriate characters. This was done on cold-press illustration board using a technique involving water color paints and colored pencils, then outlined in India ink. This image here is just a digital photograph, so it's not the best representation of the real deal, which is too big to fit on my scanner. The image quality is not as sharp as I'd like, but it'll have to do for now.

At least there's no Jar Jar here.
