We are Venom!

Venom

A pumped up angry maniac bonded to a symbiotic alien life form resembling black goo. What's not to like? The Green Goblin may be Spider-man's #1 foe, but Venom is by far the most popular. He's also one of my most favourite characters from the Marvel Universe. And it's with good reason, too. Just look at his design. The huge, evil eyes, the teeth, the green slime, the spider logo. Venom is just plain cool.

What I like most about Venom is that no two artist draw him alike. I tried to put a little bit of my own spin on him here. Rather than draw each of his teeth individually, I decided to stylize them with a single jagged line. I made his bottom jaw bigger than the top, and he's got a big, twisted, but kinda goofy smile going on.

For his muscles I decided that instead of going the typical super detailed exaggerated American comic book look, I used a minimum amount of muscle detail and enlarged the most important muscle areas to an extent that is well beyond human. Now, if a guy like The Hulk were in this picture, the Hulk would have to be even bigger than Venom just for the sake of scale.

Yeah, that's a torn and tattered Spider-man costume he's holding. Did Venom finally defeat ol' Web-head, or is it just a memento from a previous battle being carried around as a form of intimidation? That's for you to decide!

Rough pencil coloured in Adobe Photoshop, finished in mid June of 2001.

Now, for the first time ever, here is the original sketch that would eventually lead to the final product above

Venom Sketch

You can see here all of my rough lines and basic construction that goes into the creation of one of my drawings. What I would do with this is create a darker photocopy and trace it over nice and clean on another sheet of paper using a variety of different shades of pencils. In this case, the final product doesn't look too different from the sketch, though sometimes I might change things as I go along.

As you can see, quite a lot of work goes into one of these. To further prove this, here is an alternate version of Venom that I drew before this one.

Alternate Venom

It took me awhile to get a drawing of Venom that I was happy enough with to start colouring. After pages and pages worth of sketches, I came up with this one. I was originally going to work with this one as a base, but right before I was going to start, I decided that I could do better. So, as you can see, there are a lot of steps involved in the creation of a SykoGrafix image.

Hope you enjoyed that. If you thought that was pretty cool and would like to see more entries like this, tell me.
