Jersey Devil

Jersey Devil

Spring 2006, pencil & Photoshop.

The Jersey Devil is a legendary creature that is said to live in the New Jersey Pine Barrens and terrorized people in the 1800s. Some people believe that it might be real. Apparently Napoleon Bonaparte's brother had an encounter with it once.

I did some research to know a little bit about what people claimed it looks like and what it did. Ultimately, based on the accounts I read, I chose to represent the Jersey Devil as a standing horse with horns, large bat-like wings, and two tails.

This was in the Spring of 2006 done for some kind of book about creatures that may or may not exist. I don't know if this book has been published, but I was never going to be paid for it anyway so it doesn't matter that much. I just wanted to try something new and challenge myself. I like drawing monsters so it was fun to work on. I drew it in pencil and then painted it in Photoshop and added some photographic textures for things like the fur and the wing membrane.
