Jewel Dragon
A stark contrast from the other dragons, the 4th in the series is a less vicious looking beast with a very unique theme. With the first 3 dragons, it was pretty obvious that red = fire, blue = ice, and yellow = sand. From there it was easy to pick out a setting for which to influence the look of the creature. But what about for purple?
I can't explain how I came up with the idea for this one, but just one day I suddenly thought about a purple dragon in a big crystal cave. Then I thought that the dragon's scales should also be jewels. Perhaps the cave itself is made up of the dragon's own scales, or the scales of many others like it.
And then I thought about doing something a bit different than the typical bad looking dragon that I usually do. So for a change, I made "her" tending its perl-like eggs while a few of them hatched. I originally intended for there to be rows and rows of eggs, but there was already too much detail, so I got lazy.
Purple is a difficult color to work with. It was hard to make the different elements stand out and not look like a big purple mess. But I limited myself to purple, and I stuck with it, adding a few shades of pink and violet-blue. I hope I balanced the colors out enough so that it doesn't look too Barbie-like.
This was finished in December 2000.
