Girl with Destroyed Robot
This was for a school project from the Ontario College of Art and Design, where the assignment was to use foreground, midground, and background, have the midground be the focus, and the foreground be extremely close to the viewers eye. I came up with a neat concept where someone would be standing over a destroyed robot, and the dismembered parts of the robot would comprise the foreground and the background, and the parts in the foreground would be so close that you could see the small wires and mechanical components inside. There was a lot of details and things got pretty complicated. I was originally going to have a dude be the one standing over the wreckage, but later changed my concept to a girl because I think the image of a cute, thin girl carrying a huge freakin' gun is pretty damn cool.
I was really, really, rushed on finishing this. I didn't give myself enough time. I pulled an all nighter just to have something that I could hand in. You might think that this is pretty good, but honestly, there are lots of issues with it. The design on the girl's costume isn't anything special, the colours are really quick and sloppy, and there really isn't much of a fixed light source. I just couldn't spend the time I needed to in order to make it as good as it could be. It' makes a funny story though, because on the way home from school, I was so tired that I nodded off and fell out of my seat on the bus. Luckily, that happened right before my stop, otherwise I might have slept through it.
Here's a shot from one of the steps it took to get to the final. I think that the line art still has potential. I had always planned to go back and colour it again, but's it's a been a year since I did it, so I'm just going to leave it as is. Perhaps I'll revisit the concept later.
Finished Spring 2003 with Adobe Photoshop and Streamline.
