Old Magenta Pics.Drawing Magenta was the first time I had actually created an original anime character that worked enough for me to draw her again. Her creation paved the way for my other 2 cute girl characters, and I can't count how many times I've drawn her since. I use her a lot as an example during the drawing anime classes that I teach. Here are a few choice pictures that show how I've changed the character design and refined my drawing and colouring style over the years. They were all coloured in Adobe Photoshop.
This is a very early drawing of Magenta from Summer of 2000, I think. I'm pretty sure that this was only the second time I had drawn her. She's a pretty standard, average anime girl in a sense, because I didn't go to any great lengths to make her too extravagant in any way. With hair that long, there was no reason to! Sharp eyed anime fans may recognize the pose. I was having trouble drawing her right hand making the "V" sign, so I used a picture of Misato from my Neon Genesis Evangelion DVD insert for help. I'm not above using reference like that, and I changed the pose enough to make it my own.
This one is from a bit later during the summer of 2000. Here is when I really started to get the style down. I like be economical with the number of lines I use, but I also like to exaggerate really small details and make them really big. You can see that the stitching on the denim is really big, and she now sports a huge belt buckle. Her massive sneakers are another part of the style I came up with. I also added freckles under her eyes. I forgot to draw that little bit of hair that sticks out from the part in the middle, and I think it was too hard to draw anyway so I didn't bother with it anymore. This was specifically made with my drawing class in mind. I really don't like how I coloured this, but I had no idea how to achieve the cel-shaded look at the time.
This one is more recent, from Winter of 2002, but I don't really like it. It's too flat and lifeless and not really drawn all that well. I forgot the freckles too. But this was good practice on digital inking via the drawing tablet and I think I figured out the process of cel-shading a bit better. I rushed this one too much, but t served its purpose. © SykoGrafix Inc.
