Pixel Paintings of the Princesses of Process Pigment!
After taking several months off from drawing to heal a repetitive stress related wrist injury, I felt that I needed to get back into the swing of things. I started to wear a brace on my wrist which gave me some much needed protection, allowing me to draw and colour again without much discomfort. So the first thing I did was this series of digital paintings starring the SykoGirls. Since I've drawn them so much I figured doing this would be the best way to just start drawing again. For each of them I did a rough, sketchy drawing, scanned into Photoshop, cleaned it up a little, and painted it with a very loose, rough style.
The point of these images was not to try and make a perfect picture. I just wanted to get something done, and I only gave myself one day to finish each of them. So I just dealt with any flaws as best as I could and moved on to the next step in order to finish on time. I also experimented with a few new techniques. The shadows are done with a certain colour, and the lines were changed from black to that same colour as the shadows. Despite anything that could have been better, I would have to say that I was successful in what I set out to do.
Amber is the first in the series. No reason why she went first, it just worked out that way. In fact, I think I may have decided to do the other 2 girls like this only after I was about finished with Amber here. You can see that the shadows are in purple, as is the line colour. It's a lot of fun to paint in this style. The results don't even really look digital.
Magenta went next. I quite like this pose and the expression on her face. You can see that this painting style is a bit chalky and not quite as vibrant as the colours usually look when I draw them. Green was used for the shadows and eye colour. I wasn't sure if that would work, but I think it turned out ok.
With Cyan I decided to make her pose a little different that the other 2 girls'. The others are looking straight at us, kind of like they're "playing to the camera". So I made Cyan looking away, as if she's annoyed by the fact that she has to stand there. Her eyes a bit brighter and shinier than usual here. Blue was used for the shadows and line colour, and if you haven't figured it out by now, I used a darker shade of the eye colour in all 3 cases.
What's that? You say you want some close ups? Well ok then!
