Sci Fi Hieroglyphics

Blue Stone Texture

This was done for a texture assignment for the Ontario College of Art and Design first year 2D Design class. The idea was to somehow create a texture in 2 dimensions using any method. It should fool the viewer into thinking they could touch it and actually feel the texture. I chose to use Photoshop. This was one of the best marks I had gotten all year. The teacher really liked it, and many students did not believe that the metal frame wasn't a separate piece placed on top of the blue stone.

However, I'm not as pleased with this. Don't get me wrong, I like it, but I just wish that I could have done a bit more with it, like smoothing out a few areas and rounding off the corners. But I did this not only to fulfill the needs of the course, but to get some practice time with Photoshop and to try a few new things. So I succeeded on that front.

The main idea I had for this was to create a natural looking texture that was unnatural in colour. I thought a blue rock with some ancient hieroglyphics carved into it would look cool. The thing is, when I applied the hieroglyphics, they looked like they were carved out too perfectly. I was about to change it when I figured that it added an eeriness to the piece, as if this was made by an ancient civilization, but they had laser technology. The metal frame caps it off and adds depth. I think it's pretty cool, and I had a lot of fun doing it, but I mainly did it as a learning exercise.
