Just add DNA!
The final project for the dreaded Colour Principals class in my first year at the Ontario College of Art and Design was to pick an "issue" and do a piece of work commenting on it somehow while also fulfilling certain colour related requirements that were taught throughout the course.
The issue that I chose was human cloning. I went with that because I thought it would be fun, and because it was in the news a lot at the time. I found watching the debates over whether or not human cloning was a good thing were fairly humourous. So I chose to take a lighthearted, not so serious approach to my piece.
As an interesting contrast to the futuristic idea of cloning, I wanted to do a retro style ad. So I used a typical blonde spokes model (and her clone), flat areas of colour and a fancy, classy looking typeface, all very similar to look and feel of old Coca-Cola ads. I also chose, just on a whim, to take influence from Bruce Timm and the talented folks who worked on the Batman and Superman Animated Series, as that style is sleek and futuristic while still grounded in the past.
Even though the colour choices were made because of the nature of the project, they also help reinforce the old style of ad that this piece is trying to emulate. The unborn baby on the can is actually a picture of an embryo that I found online. And yes, as the text says, it's from concentrate. You can go ahead and guess exactly what the stuff is made of then. It's supposed to be funny. Any ways, this netted me an A. The teacher said she couldn't find anything wrong with it. That really helped my final mark, because I was hurting in that class.
As for my personal views on cloning, I'm neither for nor against it. Rather I'm curious as to what's going to happen with it. And if that means that one day the Earth is taken over by a horrible army of mutant clones, I'd probably think that'd be pretty cool.
