Ninja Vs. Egg: The Epic Battle of BreakfastAn assignment for an Ontario College of Art and Design drawing class was to illustrate a how-to manual that was self explanatory without any words. Neither of the choices where particularly exciting, but I eventually decided on how to make an omelette. In order to spice things up and make it fun to draw, I made it so it's a ninja making an omelette. See if you can follow the amazing action.
I used a Japanese comic book style of story telling to do this. I thought of it as a great manga style fight scene. I find the battle between a ninja and an egg to be very funny, but the use of action, camera angles, and panel work actually do make it look sort of exciting and serious. That's essentially the joke. The egg is thrown into the air and kicked. It somehow winds up in a bowl (?). Then ham, cheese, mushrooms, and tomatoes are chopped with a sword until they are completely defeated and added to the bowl.
I find these pages very amusing. The egg is mixed with the same power as a cyclone and poured into a pan. It is then cooked over the flaming bones of the ninja's fallen enemies (thank you Ninja Burger). The cooked omelet is then offered to the master, who is skeptical at first, but likes it. Then the ninja is proud, as he is the greatest omelet maker in the universe. The end. Finished Winter of 2002 with watercolour paint and coloured pencils on 2 illustration boards, © SykoGrafix Inc.
