Destruction makes Homework FUN!
Yep, this was a homework assignment, done for the Colour Principals class in my first year at the Ontario College of Art and Design. The assignment was to make any piece of art using only one colour (in this case blue, duh) along with its tones, tints, and shades by mixing it with white, black, grey, and its compliment (orange).
I hated that class.
Opportunities to do something cool like this (as in not boring) presented themselves very rarely. And when they did, there wasn't a whole lot of time to really do a great job on them. This is because the majority of the homework was made up of stupid little exercises involving the cutting and pasting of coloured pieces of paper. Wahoo. It was the class that I performed the least well at out of all of them, but I was happy just to scrape by and pass.
I just wanted to do something fun. I like robots and monsters and I love seeing them fight eachother in anime and kaiju films and the like, so here we are. The dragon-like neck of the beast is dropping on top of the robot, while the heroic looking mech (with a slight 70's super-robot look crossed with Gundam influence) struggles to hold it up with one arm while preparing to shoot it with the oversized rifle in his opposite hand. Oh, the drama!
I finished this in the Fall of 2001 using watercolour paints and coloured pencils. It was handed back to me with the grade of A-, which I was very happy about. The teacher noted on the back that it could have used a few more darker values. I agreed and retouched it a bit before I scanned it for placement here on the site. I like this a lot, but I just wish that this was more than just another weekly assignment because I would have liked to have spent more time on it to make the base drawing a bit better. And I also wish that it was worth more towards the final grade. I could have used it!
